2009 Membership Drive
Happy New Year! We had wonderful gathering for our Mountainbrook Civic Association (MBCA) annual meeting on January 24, 2009 at the Hampton Inn Phillips Place. The program started with a safety briefing by SSG Pardue and Officer Whitesel of Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department. Our president, Karen Willis, then led us through a recap of 2008 and outlined our goals for 2009. We ended with the financial report by Sandy Carlson, our treasurer. It's now time to kick-off our annual membership drive -- our GOAL for 2009 is 100% participation. In light of the current economic conditions, the board voted to maintain the civic association dues at $75 for 2009. However this will require our community -- more than ever -- to support the civic association. Our membership has historically hovered around 70% of the neighborhood. If 70% of our neighbors join at the $75 level, we still project a $2,000 shortfall in meeting our fiscal responsibilities. This is significant as the board already cut expenses by 6% in 2008. If we are not able to raise the funds needed to operate our budget (see below), we will be forced to cut expenses by an additional 6% in 2009. To help in this effort we ask those who can to consider contributing at the $100 level. Or if you are unable to contribute at the $75, we still hope you will participate and support the neighborhood. We would greatly appreciate ANY AMOUNT.
Ultimately we need to raise dues to $125 per year in order to a) maintain the neighborhood in a manner consistent with our property values, b) stay on par with inflation, c) execute planned beautification projects, d) cover increased insurance costs, and e) establish reserves for life-cycle maintenance. Recognizing that a sizable increase in one year is not practical, the board approved a phased increase over three years -- $75 for 2009, then to $100 in 2010, and $125 in 2011. Please remember that the Mountainbrook Civic Association is separate from the Mountainbrook Club (Swim & Tennis).
