Brown thumb or green thumb! A garden club is all about learning about nature, our environment and gardening!
Garden Lovers not only promotes a love of gardening but knowledge of the environment and nature in Mountainbrook. Did you know that many wonderful native plants grow in our yards and in our park? Do you know how to make things grown in southern soil? What can you do about the deer? If you want the answers to these and many other outdoor questions just come and visit of meetings. They are published in the Mountainbrook newsletter or just call our president or membership chairman for information.
Garden Lovers has contributed to the beautification of Mountainbrook for many years but we do need you to help us. Being a member of Garden Lovers if taking an active part of our neighborhood. You find out what is going on and what you can do to influence the direction of our area.
Garden Lovers is part of a larger network of clubs that promote gardening, conservation, and environmental study. We are part of the largest volunteer organization in North Carolina. Among the state projects wee contribute to are the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo, The Daniel Boone Native Gardens in Boone, and the Garden for the Blind in Raleigh. We promote youth clubs (Garden Lovers sponsors The Blazing Bees in our neighborhood), the Nature Conservancy, and scholarships to North Carolina Colleges and Universities.
Garden Lovers is also a part of The Charlotte Council of Garden Clubs and works to support its educational causes such as work with the Girl Scouts, work with the elderly, and providing programs and information for the public.
Come and join us for informative programs and fellowship with others who share a love of nature!

Update from the The Garden Lovers of Mountainbrook
August 5, 2009:
Dear Blazing Bees and Parents,
Congratulations are in order for the Bees who participated in the flower show held in June at the South County Library. We did a sweep!!!!
The awards are as follows:
1. Dish Garden entries (based on age categories): Laurie Booth Second Place, Janie Booth Third Place, Dillon Mayhew, Third Place and Britney Mayhew, Honorable Mention.
2. Tri fold display of native plants and information (again by age category): First Place and Flower Show Award ribbon (this is big!!!) by Jonston Corbin, Whitley Gray and Britney Mayhew; First Place and Flower Show Award ribbon (we were on a roll!!!) by Annalise Cox, Christina Stanifer and Kate Gray; Second Place by Sam Perry, Stephan Cox and Dillon Mayhew; Second Place by Janie Booth, Laurie Booth and Claire Hollifield; Third Place by Mac Corbin and Will Kittelson. Children did the project as small groups.
I am going to get Mr. Bee (Bill) to work and see if he can order some generic ribbons for the children so they can have their own ribbon. The tri-folds were awarded for the group who did it. The dish garden entrants can be given the ribbons because it was individual.
I am so proud of these children, boy what a group. I can hardly wait for September.
Speaking of September's meeting, if any one has some old forks and spoons they can sacrifice or see at a flea market please collect and get them to me. I am hoping for September's project to do wind chimes. I saw an example at one of the garden club's display window don for the Spring Southern Show this year and it was so neat. I would need ahead of time so I can get Mr. Bee (my Bill) to drill holes in the handles.
Warmest Regards,
Helen M. Mayhew, Queen Bee

Garden Lovers of Mountainbrook was awarded the "Garden Club of the Year" by The Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc. at its Annual Meeting in Hickory. Garden Lovers was recognized for its work with its neighborhood, its community, and the state. Garden Lovers is a member of the Charlotte Council of Garden Clubs, Inc., The Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc., and National Garden Clubs, Inc. The award was a certificate and a check for $300.00.
It is active with its youth club, the Blazing Bees, the Girl Scouts, and presents a yearly program to a elder care facility. At the Southern Spring Home and Garden Show in March it decorated a niche celebrating youth gardening. It contributes to scholarships in Charlotte and statewide as well as donations to various gardens around the state. However, most of its funds are put back into Mountainbrook for beautification. At present, the club maintains the bridge area over McMullen Creek. A continous activity!!
Its fundraising activity is a pine needle sale that is its main source of money for the work it does. This is a club that likes to get in the "dirt" and help make Mountainbrook a better place to live. For information about Garden Lovers call Judy Barnes at 704-553-1413.
