The Anne Heinig Memorial Park Foundation: Early during the development of the Mountainbrook community, a neighbor by the name of Anne Heinig went door-to-door gathering donations and funding for the acquisition and construction of a pool. That pool was later to become one of the attractions for the Mountainbrook neighborhood.
In 1968, Orthopedic Surgeon, Charles F. "Jake" Heinig, a long-time Mountainbrook resident at 3301 Mill Pond Road and later at 3521 Johnny Cake Lane, suddenly lost his young wife, Anne, at age 35. As a tribute to Anne, Jake purchased about 3 acres of land, adjacent to the pool, for use as a park for the Mountainbrook neighborhood. In that same year, the park was renamed in her honor, The Anne Heinig Memorial park, and has henceforth been managed by the like-named foundation.
Each year, Mountainbrook residents, together with Club members, spruce up the park by their donation of time, materials, and sweat-equity to maintain the park as jewel of the Mountainbrook community. A jogging trail improvement to the park was made in 1977, and a few short years ago, an Eagle scout reinvigorated the track to keep it a functional component of the park. In 2008 a community fundraiser effort led by the Mountainbrook Civic Association and other concerned neighbors modernized the playground equipment. Future phases for the playground are planned.
Park amenities include a playground, basketball court, an open lawn for field sports including soccer, baseball, volleyball, Frisbee, or just about anythying you can imagine. Regular league use is not appropriate. The field is also used for Mountainbrook Civic Association sponsored events such as the annual Spring Egg Hunt and Halloween parade and party. Swim Club activities include annual opening day parties, July 4th festivities, numerous special events and Labor Day pool closing.
The park cabana is available for a fee, in the absence of a community function, on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations must be made in advance and scheduled with the foundation president, Frank Barnes, at 704-553-1413 or on-line at www.MBCivic.com/Park_Request.
